Guidelines on PLAI Grants

THESIS / RESEARCH GRANT

OBJECTIVE

To provide financial assistance to four (4) PLAI members, one (1) in each cluster Region (Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao, NCR) who are of good standing and working on a thesis / research.

NATURE OF GRANT/SCHEDULE OF RELEASE OF GRANT

AMOUNT CONDITION
P5,000.00 Upon the  approval of the application by the Scholarship and Other Grants Committee
P5,000.00 Upon submission of the final copy (bound and soft copy) of the thesis/research paper duly approved and signed by the thesis panel/administrator

 

SUSTAINABILITY OF FUND

  1. No thesis/research grantee will be accepted until such time that the two (2) four (4) previous grantees finish their thesis/research.
  2. Allotment of 10% of total net income from every fora, seminars, conferences/congress’ registration fee for the PLAI Grants Fund.

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants must meet the following qualifications and criteria:

  1. completion of all academic requirements for the master’s program;
  2. approved thesis/research proposal for oral defense;
  3. a member in good standing who has paid his/her annual dues for the last three (3) consecutive years;
  4. the thesis proposal must be in the field of Library and Information Science and it should be newly defended (Newly defended means – must not be more than 2 semester from the date of research proposal);
  5. presentation of a convincing plan for completion of the thesis within one year upon approval of the thesis proposal.

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must submit the following requirements to the PLAI Scholarship and Other Grants Committee:

  1. Letter of application, accompanied by a research proposal containing the prescribed format (APA);
    1. Title
    2. Author and Affiliation
    3. Background of the Study
    4. Statement of the Problem (Main and Subproblems)
    5. Significance of the Study
    6. Scope and Limitations
    7. Methodology
  2. Timeframe for completion of research work
  3. Letter/Endorsement from the adviser duly approved by the Dean endorsing the proposal
  4. Curriculum vitae with recent photo

LIMITATIONS/AGREEMENT OF UNDERTAKING

  • A final copy (printed and soft) of the funded thesis must be submitted not more than two (2) months after completion, defense and approval of the thesis.
  • Due acknowledgment of the PLAI assistance shall be made in a single sheet of the final copy in the preliminary pages of the soft copy and bound thesis.
  • The final output of the approved/funded thesis shall be presented in the PLAI General Assembly during congress.
  • The Grantee is given two (2) semesters or 1 year to finish the funded research/thesis grant.
  • Non-compliance of the stipulated terms and conditions would imply forfeiture of the release of the 50% of the grant and the return of the first released amount to PLAI
  • PLAI deserves the right to terminate the grant in the event that the applicant has been found falsifying any submitted documents and/or violating any laws or Code of Ethics in the practice of librarianship as a profession. 

SCHOLARSHIP GRANT

OBJECTIVE

To provide financial assistance to members who cannot afford to take and/or finish a master’s degree and increase the number of professional librarians, particularly those who are teaching or who intends to teach the Bachelor of Library and Information Science (BLIS) program.

NATURE OF GRANT

A full tuition and fees per semester will be given to four (4) deserving scholars , one (1) in each cluster region (Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao, NCR), the amount of which will depend on the library school fees where the applicant wishes to enroll, upon the approval of the application by the Scholarship and Other Grants Committee.

SELECTION PROCESS

Any member of the Board or RC President may nominate or receive nominations for screening by the PLAI Scholarship and Other Grants Committee, which in turn submits a list of qualified nominees for approval of the National Board of Trustees.

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants must meet the following qualifications and criteria :

  • a graduate of the Bachelor of Library and Information Science (BLIS) degree;
  • have passed the Librarians Licensure Exam and is certified by the Professional Regulation Commission;
  • a member in good standing (who has paid his/her annual dues for the last three (3) consecutive years);
  • intends to teach a required BLIS course/s in an accredited library school;
  • has a general weighted average of 85 or its equivalent;
  • have not been a recipient of other types of PLAI grant.

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must submit the following requirements to the PLAI Scholarship and Other Grants Committee :

  • Letter of application
  • copy of transcript of record and diploma;
  • certificate / true copy of grades from the preceding semester;
  • certificate of good moral character or a recommendation letter from a former teacher or school head.
  • Certificate of good standing duly signed by RCs president

LIMITATIONS/AGREEMENT OF UNDERTAKING

  • The Grantee is given six (6) semesters to finish his/her degree.
  • Non-compliance of the stipulated terms and conditions would imply forfeiture of the release of the of the grant and the return of the first released amount to PLAI
  • PLAI deserves the right to terminate the grant in the event that the applicant has been found falsifying any submitted documents and/or violating any laws or Code of Ethics in the practice of librarianship as a profession. 

TRAVEL GRANT

 OBJECTIVE

To provide financial assistance to members who will present accepted paper for a presentation or invited as speaker in national and international conference related to Library and Information Science.

NATURE OF GRANT

Subject to the availability of funds, transportation fare may be given to the official delegate provided that :

  1. the PLAI underwrites fifty percent (50%) of the total transportation expenses for travel in Asia, twenty percent (20%) for travel elsewhere;
  2. his/her chapter/employer/member himself underwrites fifty percent (50%) of the total transportation expenses for travel in Asia, eighty percent (80%) for travel elsewhere;
  3. this is the first time he/she is seeking financial assistance;
  4. the assistance shall be in Philippine currency;
  5. Single availment of the travel grant is allowed.

ELIGIBILITY

 The PLAI Board may appoint a member as official delegate  to a regional / international conference provided that :

  1. he/she is a Filipino citizen in good health and of good moral character
  2. he/she is below fifty years old and is in active practice;
  3. he/she has served as a Chapter officer / PLAI Committee member within the last five(5) years;
  4. he/she has been invited to read a paper or to act as a discussion leader/facilitator;
  5. the conference he/she is attending should last not more than five (5) days;
  6. the theme of the conference is of immediate relevance to the needs of Philippine librarianship.

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must submit the following requirements to the PLAI Scholarship and Other Grants Committee :

  • Letter of application
  • Certificate of good standing duly signed by RCs president
  • Notification of the accepted paper or invitation letter with seminar/conference program
  • Travel expenses proposal
  • Endorsement from his/her Administrator

LIMITATIONS/AGREEMENT OF UNDERTAKING

  • within thirty days after arrival, he/she shall render a written report on the conference he/she attended to the Board in session;
  • he/she shall turn over to the PLAI Secretariat official hand-outs received during the conference.
  • Non-compliance of the stipulated terms and conditions would imply forfeiture of the release of the of the grant or the return of the released amount to PLAI
  • PLAI deserves the right to terminate the grant in the event that the applicant has been found falsifying any submitted documents and/or violating any laws or Code of Ethics in the practice of librarianship as a profession.
